SKUGGADALR: The Valley of Lost Shadows is an experimental animated short film that delves into the fragile intersection of memory, loss, and the nature of time. Set in a remote Nordic landscape where the sun grace the horizon for only 56 days a year, the narrative follows a young girl who unearths a profound truth: shadows are more than just an absence of light. They are vessels for forgotten memories, unfulfilled desires, and remnants of lives searching for closure. Conceived by Guillermo Trujillo Accini, the film is a testament to the power of human-guided generative artistry.
Creative process
The film utilizes the PENCIL RELIEF SHADOWS technique, a bespoke visual methodology developed by the studio. This process blends traditional tactile elements—including hand-drawn graphite, graphite textures, and high-contrast physical lighting—with advanced generative AI. By anchoring digital fluidity in the organic grain of paper and the precise geometry of light, we achieve a unique, hand-crafted aesthetic that defies the conventions of standard digital animation.
