AI Commercial or Traditional Shoot? Let the Story Decide.
Butaka — Visionary Content · November 2, 2026 · 3 min read
Artificial intelligence changed what audiovisual production can do. But it did not change one thing: before deciding how we are going to produce, we need to know what we want to tell.
Today a brand can create places that do not exist, build entire worlds without travelling to a location and experiment with new aesthetics. At the same time, a camera in front of a real person still carries a force that no technology makes unnecessary.
So what works better: producing with artificial intelligence or shooting a traditional piece?
The answer does not depend on the budget alone. It depends on the story.
When producing with AI makes sense
Imagine a commercial that has to take place across five countries, travel through different eras or place a product inside an impossible universe.
AI can open creative paths that used to demand large-scale productions, complex visual effects or a long list of locations.
It also makes it possible to explore concepts, develop visual proposals and produce versions for different formats.
But it does not mean everything becomes automatic.
To reach a cinematic result, direction, composition, lighting, editing, sound and consistency between shots remain essential.
And new challenges appear: keeping characters consistent, representing products with precision and controlling visual details through the whole piece.
It is the ground where we develop our audiovisual production with artificial intelligence.
AI can generate images. A film needs direction.
When shooting is still the better path
Some stories are valuable precisely because they happened in front of a camera.
An honest testimony. A person telling their own experience. A spontaneous gesture. An industrial process that has to be shown with precision. A documentary that depends on observing reality.
In these cases, a traditional shoot is often the right way in.
It is the base of our Live Action film production.
Human presence, the interaction between characters and the fidelity of what actually happens are not creative limitations. Many times they are the heart of the story.
And when a brand needs to represent a physical product with absolute accuracy, it is also worth asking carefully whether AI generation offers enough control.
What about hybrid productions?
In certain projects, live action and artificial intelligence can complement each other.
Real people or products can be filmed, while generative tools build environments, visual extensions, transitions or elements that would be impossible to capture in a conventional way.
It is not about using every technology available.
It is about choosing the ones that add something concrete to the result.
Does AI always mean a lower cost?
Not necessarily.
A production may reduce the need for locations, transport, sets or shoot days. But it can also require many iterations, creative supervision, compositing, animation, corrections and post-production.
Budget depends on the complexity of the idea, the duration, the level of fidelity required, the number of versions and the finish of the piece.
A simple commercial does not cost the same as a film with recurring characters, multiple locations and demanding visual continuity.
That is why comparing the cost of generating images with the budget of a full audiovisual production leads to the wrong conclusions.
The idea first. The tools after.
At Butaka we have been exploring ways of telling stories since 2009.
We have watched cameras, formats, platforms, audiences and technologies evolve.
Artificial intelligence represents a new stage of that evolution.
We do not believe the future lies in abandoning traditional filmmaking, nor in using AI for absolutely everything.
We believe it lies in widening creative possibilities and choosing the best path for each story.
The projects we have produced are the clearest picture of how we apply this logic.
The idea leads. Technology follows.
